Our kayak tours are all well equipped with all the gear needed to show you everything from the majestic sunsets to the unique local wildlife of the OBX. With single and tandem boats, paddling with a certified guide is a great way for the whole family to explore the outdoors. We offer a variety of types of kayak tours to meet all interests such as Ecology and Natural History Tours, and Specialized Skills Instruction. Kitty Hawk Kites prides itself in being a pioneer in the recreation industry. All of our guides are ACA certified and trained in first aid and CPR. Some kayak tours are subject to seasonal availability. The Alligator River and Maritime Forest kayak tours are available year round.

What should I wear for kayaking?

Wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing such as a swimsuit, rash guard, or moisture-wicking athletic wear. Don’t forget to bring water shoes or sandals, a hat, and sunscreen for protection.


What should I bring on a kayaking trip?

Essentials include:

  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses with a strap
  • A waterproof bag for valuables

What is the age limit for Kayak Tours?

  • Minimum age: Children must be at least 5 years old to participate in our Kayak Tours.
  • Children between 5-12 years old must ride in a tandem kayak with an adult.
  • We can accommodate paddlers of all ages on our Kayak Rentals, available in Corolla, Duck, Nags Head, Manteo, Rodanthe, Avon, and Hatteras Village.

Are waivers required for this activity?

Yes, waivers are required for all participants.

  • Participants under 18 years old will need a parent or legal guardian to sign the waiver.

Are the kayak tours beginner friendly?

Yes! Our team of guides will spend the beginning of each tour with a paddling demonstration to ensure each participant feels comfortable and safe. We cater to all skill levels and prioritize safety on the water.


What happens if it rains?

The weather in the Outer Banks is unpredictable! During your tour, safety will always be our top priority. Our guides monitor the forecast closely.

  • If conditions are unsafe, you’ll be contacted to reschedule, receive a wind check, or get a full refund based on our cancellation policy.
  • If it’s safe to continue, we will still offer the tour, even if there’s light passing rain.

What wildlife can I expect to see while kayaking?
