Join Billy Vaughn with the Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School as he gives an account of the Wright Brothers’ history before their work with the ‘02 glider. This will include their early investigations, the invention of wing warping to control roll, and their first trip to Kitty Hawk. Listen to the story of how and why they chose the Outer Banks, some of the natural history of the area, including the significance of the ancient barrier dunes, and Jockey’s Ridge being the last example of the living dunes the Wrights utilized. Learn about the significance of the ‘02 glider in the Wright’s pursuit of powered flight. We will talk about their addition of the integrated rudder, and how this allowed for the first controlled flights in all three axes: roll, pitch, and yaw. This is related to the story of their successes with this aircraft, and how they led directly to the first powered flight in 1903.
