and more! 2010 Family Fun Events and Kite Festival ScheduleAPRILApril 2nd & 3rd - Kitty Hawk Kites Fly Into Spring & Easter Eggstravaganza - Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head, North Carolina combines the annual “Fly Into Spring” event with the “Easter Eggstravaganza” to create one large celebration for National Kite Month! This spring kickoff event will be held April 2nd and 3rd, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. On April 3rd, join us (and the Easter Bunny!) at the Kitty Hawk Kites store in Nags Head, located across the street from Jockey’s Ridge, at mile post 12.5, for the largest Easter Egg Hunt in the Outer Banks! We'll have over 2,000 candy-filled eggs waiting to be found. With fresh spring air and the famous Outer Banks wind, participants won’t want to miss the first event of 2010! FLORIDA EVENT!April 3rd & 4th, 2010- Kitty Hawk Kites 6th Annual Beach Kite Festival - 10am to 5pm - At the Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island - Ft Walton Beach, FL. This two day festival will feature large show kites as well as free kid's kite making & games. Spectators can see huge kites that will take the shape of sea animals, as well as other large specialty kites flown throughtout the event. MAYMay 14th - 17th - 38th Annual Hang Gliding Spectacular - Jockey’s Ridge State Park & Jockey’s Ridge Crossing (mp 12.5), Nags Head. This is the world’s oldest continuous Hang gliding competition. Hang gliding pros from all over the world come to the Outer Banks to compete and have fun on Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Demonstrations, a street dance and awards ceremonies are all features of this spectacular event. Families can enjoy a rock climbing wall, hang gliding simulator, kite making, face painting, and much more. A portion of the events proceeds will go to benefit Friends of Jockeys Ridge, a non-profit organization which supports the development of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Make and fly your own kite, try yo-yo stunts, get your face painted, demo all the new toys for 2009 and have lots of fun! This Wednesday family extravaganza kicks off our summer long Kid’s Day, held every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Rogallo Kite festival, presented by Kitty Hawk Kites, will continue honoring Francis M. Rogallo, NASA scientist and inventor of the Flexible Wing, who just passed away in September of 2009. This two day festival will feature our signature kite flying on the dunes of Jockey's ridge as well as nightly entertainment celebrating the history of kiting. JULYJuly 10th & 11th - 32nd Annual Wright Kite Festival - Wright Brother’s Memorial (mp 8), Kill Devil Hills, presented by Kitty Hawk Kites. This festival is enjoyed by all ages with a spectacular kite show put on by Larger than Life Kites. Come see a large sea animal kites and our deltas and parafoils dance in the air during this jaw dropping event. There will also be stunt kite demos, games, kids kite making and contests. AUGUSTAugust 12th - Kitty Hawk Kites Watermelon Festival - Kitty Hawk Kites (mp 12.5), Nags Head. You won’t want to miss this big outdoor summer bash with a homegrown, backyard feel. The festival features family entertainment, seed spitting contests, a dunk tank, huge inflatables (moon bounces, obstacle course, and others), and, of course, watermelons! All proceeds will be donated to the local Wright Flight Foundation--a non profit which helps local 5th graders master goal-setting skills and excel (or improve) academically with the reward of flight. August 28th - The 11th Annual Kitty Hawk Kites Ocean Games and Surf Kayak Competition – Ramada Plaza (mile post 9.5), Kill Devil Hills. This is some of the most fun you can have at the beach! Spectators can enjoy a surf kayak competition, catching the finish of a 3 mile kayak race, and can participate in sandcastle competition , kite and toy demonstrations, and trial runs in the newest kayaks and paddleboards offered! OCTOBEROctober 16th & 17th - 24th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition - Wright Brothers Memorial (mp 8), Kill Devil Hills, presented by Kitty Hawk Kites. This competitive fly is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned by the American Kiting Association. Throughout the weekend non-competitors can enjoy workshops, demonstrations and kite making for kids. The highlights of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music, and fast paced team flying that blends both kite control and speed.
